  • Firearm Home Safety Certificate

Firearm safety is the law in the California.  Every firearm owner should understand and follow firearm safety practices, have a basic familiarity with the operation and handling of their firearm, and be fully aware of the responsibility of firearm ownership.  Pursuant to Penal Code section 26840, any person who acquires a firearm must have a Firearm Safety Certificate, unless they are statutorily exempt from the FSC requirement.

To obtain a Firearm Safety Certificate, a person must pass the Department of Justice written examination on firearm safety. Upon completion of the examination, the person is also required to perform a safe handling demonstration.  Prior to taking delivery of a firearm, you must successfully perform a safe handling demonstration with the firearm being purchased or acquired.  This demonstration must be performed in the presence of a DOJ Certified Firearms Instructor sometime between the date the DROS is submitted to the Department of Justice and the delivery of the firearm.  The firearm purchaser, and certified firearms instructor must sign an affidavit stating the safe handling demonstration was completed.

Prior to contacting our office for the written examination, you must first go the the Department of Justice website and review the Firearm Home Safety study guide. Link: www:oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/agweb/pdfs/firearm/forms/hscsg.pdf

REMEMBER: Ignorance and carelessness can result in firearm accidents.  Basic gun safety rules must be applied at all times.
